For service dogs in training, real-world practice is an essential part of their journey to becoming reliable companions. One of the most common—and important—places for service dogs to gain experience is at a store. Whether it’s navigating aisles, ignoring distractions, or staying focused on their handler, stores provide the perfect environment for honing their skills.
The Importance of Practicing in Stores
Stores are bustling, unpredictable spaces filled with a mix of sounds, scents, and sights. This makes them ideal for teaching service dogs to stay focused, navigate noises, crowds, distractions and obstacles such as narrow spaces.
Service dog trainers often take a gradual approach when introducing their canine students to these environments. They start by going to a store at a quieter, less busy time. Basic commands are used to work on navigating the store and of course, it is practice filled with lots of treats for reinforcing good behavior.
